The project proposes the transformation of 130 E 59th, currently an office building, into a live/work/learn vertical farm for migrant workers and their families. The building would feature soil beds supported by trusses and catwalks within an all-encompassing greenhouse. The soil beds can be moved to different levels of the greenhouse to optimize sun exposure for a variety of crops. The building would also house indoor laboratories, packaging facilities, classrooms, housing for migrant workers and their families, recreational facilities, daycares, legal services, and a supermarket selling locally grown produce. The design of the structure prioritizes efficiency and adaptability to changes in the surrounding environment, with the potential to be replicated in other high-rise buildings in Midtown.

Furthermore, the greenhouse structure could serve as a habitat for native species when left abandoned, contributing to the resilience of the area’s ecosystem. The project envisions a future where agricultural transformations can be applied to other buildings in Midtown, offering a clear logic of formation and fostering species diversity.
